Basic Photographic Editing Notes

Exposure:

-Exposure is the amount of light collected by the sensor in your camera during a single picture

Overexposed: If the shot is exposed too long the photograph will be washed out

Underexposed: If the shot is exposed too short the photograph will appear too dark

White Balance:

White balance in digital photography means adjusting colours so that the image looks more natural.

We do this primarily get rid of colour casts, in order to match the picture with what we saw when we took it.

Most light sources (the sun, light bulbs, flashlights, etc) do not emit purely white colour and have a certain “colour temperature”. The human brain processes the information that comes from our eye and automatically adjusts the colour temperature, so we normally see the colours correctly.

Warm>2000-3000 Kelvin

Cool>6000 Kelvin

Neutral daylight>5500 Kelvin

Focus:

-Adjustment of the distance setting on a lens to define the subject sharply. Generally, the act of adjusting a lens to produce a sharp image.
